LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES 2017:

2017 IOWA NAACP LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES

 

The Iowa NAACP Supports Legislation that:

  • Eliminates racial profiling
  • Eradicates Iowa’s high-ranking criminal justice disparities
  • Calls for special prosecutors for police involved shootings
  • Restores voting right for persons with felony convictions.
  • Enacts fair drug policies including equalizing crack and powder cocaine sentencing
  • Addresses lack of diversity in juries with DOT data collection
  • Increases fair employment including a “Ban the Box” law
  • Reforms court debt and criminal and civil forfeiture laws
  • Ends the School to Prison Pipeline
  • Reduces and/or eliminates mandatory sentencing
  • Requires diversity training for educators
  • Allows cities to adopt a municipal residency requirement for educators, police and firefighters

 

The NAACP Stands in Opposition to:

  • Voter ID Laws • Stand Your Ground Legislation • Revoking driver’s licenses for non-driver infractions
