TOOLKIT:  PROTECT CIVIL RIGHTS IN IOWA

Iowa NAACP Emergency Strategy Action re SF2385 and HF2574.png

BACKGROUND:

The Iowa House of Representatives is set to vote on a bill (HF2574 / SF2385) on Monday, April 15.  This bill has severe negative consequences for Civil and Human Rights in Iowa. (Talking Points)

WHAT THE BILL DOES AND WHY WE OPPOSE IT:

Iowa NAACP President Betty Andrews Calls this bill "A dangerous blow to civil rights in Iowa." This bill removes the power that the Iowa Civil Rights Act of 1965 gives to our Seven Iowa Civil Rights Commissioners and gives it to one person, the Director. It is opposed by all 6 current Civil Rights Commissioners, and in not in alignment with the originators of the Iowa Civil Rights Act.

Civil Rights is an non-partisan issue, however, the senate version passed along party lines.  Our lawmakers, particularly our Republican members of the Iowa House of Representatives need to hear from you TODAY, and to know that you stand on the side of representation for Iowa's diverse voices. HF2574 (SF2385) is coming to the House floor on Monday, April 15th, let your legislator know that the current version is not acceptable.
